Agricultural traceability involves more than recording which farmer supplied a raw material. It also requires knowing where it was grown, what was planted, when it was planted, and whether the production area faces any environmental risks.<\/p>\n

By linking production data to geographic locations, traceability data becomes more than a record of where products come from. It can be viewed on maps, combined with information from other sources, and checked against the actual conditions on the ground.<\/p>\n

This is where geographic locations and geospatial data<\/strong> play an important role. They add location-based context to traceability by connecting information about farmers, field boundaries, crop types, land use, and environmental conditions to real-world locations. These connections make it possible to analyze the data and check it against relevant requirements and standards, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), as well as environmental concerns such as PM2.5 and greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

Bangkok Produce Public Company Limited (BKP), part of the CP Group, provides an example of how ArcGIS can support agricultural sourcing data management. How Does ArcGIS Support BKP’s Traceability Process?<\/h2>\n

Traceability data comes from many parts of the supply chain, including farmer records, cultivated fields, collection points, and downstream operations. When this information is stored separately, it becomes more difficult to verify consistency and gain a complete view of the supply chain.<\/p>\n

To address this challenge, BKP uses ArcGIS<\/a> as a central platform to connect production-related information with geographic coordinates and actual locations. This allows users to view cultivated fields on a map and use spatial data to support verification. By combining field locations with satellite imagery and GeoAI, organizations can analyze how vegetation changes over time. For example, NDVI time-series analysis can help track changes in vegetation across different periods, revealing patterns related to planting seasons and crop growth cycles.<\/p>\n

These patterns can then be compared with existing records to identify information that may require further review. This provides an additional way to strengthen traceability by supplementing reported data with insights derived from geospatial analysis.<\/p>\n

Monitoring Field Burning and Assessing Wildfire Risks for More Responsible Sourcing<\/h3>\n

Traceability data can also be linked with environmental information to monitor and assess risks in agricultural areas.<\/p>\n

GIS can use hotspot data to identify areas with potential burning activity. Burn-scar data can also be analyzed alongside satellite imagery and AI models to detect areas showing signs of burning or other unusual changes.<\/p>\n

When an area meets predefined risk criteria, the system can issue alerts and generate reports for relevant teams to investigate further, including through on-site checks where necessary.<\/p>\n
